My Camino

Madrid

We had one day to explore Madrid and hoped to make the most of it. We’d elected to fly home from Madrid mostly because we’ve never visited. Even so, my expectations were flat. Ignorance, I guess!

Madrid more than satisfied. Beautiful architecture, rich culture, friendly people. What more could you want?

We started with a walking tour of the old town. Alba utilized storytelling to expertly draw us in, plaza by plaza, gate by gate, through the old walled cities of Christians and Muslims to the cathedral and palace.

The city was hopping all weekend. Hispanidad Madrid hosted concerts Sunday, playing off the national holiday. We saw Flamenco dancers on one plaza; a rock concert on another. Such a wonderful, warm vibe and sense of cultural pride with Spanish families out in force.

Over lunch we enjoyed a rousing big band: all males in traditional dress, singing and playing stringed and percussion instruments. We were in no hurry and enjoyed people watching from a cafe on the perimeter. The energy on a weekend such as this is enough to make you fall in love with Madrid!

On the Camino, there are very few chances to shop, and most of those for trinket souvenirs. I was ready for retail therapy. After lunch, we hit up a few shops looking for gifts for the grands. Day was drawing down when we finally called a taxi.

This weekend, it’s begun to feel like we’ve been away from home a long time. We miss our people. Our bed. Our quiet little corner of the North Country. Delighted to be on our way home this afternoon.

I’m grateful that it was only this weekend that shift transpired, while in vacation mode. Trekking, we were fully immersed in our Camino experience — a priceless gift! My Camino is woven into the fabric of my being. It will always be with me.

Hold hope. Keep faith. Walk your walk.

Buen Camino!

~ Sincerely, Sondra
